NORTH EAST OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS - Newcastle
The Battle
21 Oct 2007
Kihon Karate Wales were invited to take a squad of it's finnest Kata and Kumite students along to this A.M.A main event. To the unsuspecting student it would just be another tournament, but having been to so many over the past few years Kihon Karate has learned to always expect the un-expected.
The event was painfully well structured, with a sports hall to be filled to the brim with budding young champions, photographers, eratctic coaches and parents -that alone would render the best organiser sleepless nights along with a mamoth sized stomach ulcer!
There was no place for error and sloppiness; half hearted techniques were not even looked upon! The judges searched for outstanding ability, agility, couragousness and the will to survive the events under inmense competition from the opposition.
It's not easy to feel confident with your Karate skills when you have all the forces that be against all your best efforts; true form and precise techniques are not always enough to convince the Judges that you mean what you apply and want to take what you came for! Unless of course you have 'Merlin' in your corner as the only other chance you have of accomplishing your goals would be if you were fueled on only an 'Imense will to succeed'. This phenominal drive alone would probably list you in the new eddition of the 'un-explained, X-files series! Only the very best karate mind could pull off such an impossible task because the standards in this competition were outstanding.
The spirits of past ancestors lived and breathed inside the minds of Kihon's squad, together we battled our way through the events with heads held high, against all odds the squad took home 9 tropheys - three 1st places, two 2nd's and four 3rd's! Watching the chief referee's hand wave in favour of own were heart stopping moments.
On a few occasions we had fighters on all area's at the same time; coaching was not a problem for our "super fit" spectators including Kihons very own professional photographer who together battled they're way through the crowds in support of they're team mates - no doubt nursings a few sore throats today including myself haha.
Presentations were taking place throughtout the day, and very soon we will be able to add 'more' of the finnest action shots karate has ever seen captured by our own 'snapy happy' photographer Lynne Hutchinson.
Well done guys, you proved to the rest that you can beat the best! Your World Class in our eyes.
